Mindful

I can't believe Christmas is less than two weeks away! I'll admit I secretly love the days before Christmas more than the actual day itself. The suspense that leads up to what I'm getting, the decorating that I get to admire while riding around in my car, the visiting with friends, the shopping trips to find the perfect gift for a good friend, the feeling of joy that's in the air at the Post Office with everyone mailing presents to family across the country. I love it. And then Christmas day comes around, presents are opened and by noon, it's all over. The next day lights are taken down, trees are out on the road for garbage pickup, and no Christmas parties take place until the next year. It's sad.

My family realizes how quickly the day goes by so we do our absolute best to drag it out, loving the fact that we're still enjoying Christmas when everyone else is done. Hehe. We sleep in until around ten, take showers, turn the Christmas tree lights on and take a few pictures. We eat the annual breakfast of a sausage roll and don't think twice about going back for seconds. When that's all said and done, we mosey our way into the living room, where the gift-opening has always taken place. I say a prayer in my head and lately, we've all gone around and said one thing we're thankful for. It's always fun to hear everyone's responses. The opening commences and laughter ensues. Christmas seems to bind my family more than any other time of year and it's a neat feeling. We share gifts with each other and soon, it's time for dinner. That night as I lay my head on my pillow, I have much to be thankful for but there is a certain sadness that overwhelms me. It's funny that I would feel that way considering everyone two thousand years ago was anything but sad, rejoicing in the birth of the Lord. It's hard to be mindful of what this time of year really means because there's so much covering it up. This year, I'm going to wake up Christmas morning and journal about everything I'm thankful for and remind myself that God is the one who gave me each and every thing that I'm grateful for.
